Healthcare Jobs That Allow You To Work Outside of the Hospital

One of the greatest aspects of working in healthcare is the flexibility and limitless opportunities to change what you do! While most traditional healthcare jobs take place in a hospital or clinic, there are plenty of different and outside-the-box ways to use your training and skills, some of which don’t even require direct patient contact.

School Nurse: This is the perfect option for nurses who love working with children, or need that ideal schedule to be off on weekends, holidays, and even part of the summer! Typical duties of a school nurse include administering medications to students who need them during the school day, assessing and treating minor injuries and symptoms like headaches or nausea, and maintaining records of student immunizations and health conditions. This is a great job for nurses with school age children of their own!

Legal Consultant: Have you ever read about a high profile trial where “expert witnesses” are called to testify about the nitty gritty details behind a medical condition? Did you know that this goes on, on a much smaller scale, every day in medical claims court? Most law firms who deal with medical negligence cases employ medical experts in a variety of ways, sometimes on a freelance case-by-case basis, and sometimes as a permanent member of their staff. Legal consultants review cases and provide their expert medical opinions about what occurred and if any negligence or questionable practices occurred. Years of experience is often enough to land you one of these jobs, but there are also legal consultant certifications you can earn to give you a competitive edge.

Clinical Instructor: If you enjoy teaching others and feel that you have a lot of experience to share, you might enjoy teaching clinicals to students learning your trade. While it usually requires a higher level degree to teach full time at a university, being a clinical instructor often requires just a bachelor’s degree and some experience. Clinical instructors supervise students in the lab or clinical setting and help guide them through the learning process. This is a great way to feel like you are making a positive impact on the future of healthcare!

Case Management: Are you good at multitasking? Case management nurses help coordinate the many moving parts of the healthcare system, all to make sure the patient gets the most out of their care. Coordinating services like PT, OT, or speech when a patient is being discharged, helping get insurance authorization for a procedure, or helping a patient get prescriptions delivered to their home are just a few of the many ways case managers can help simplify the healthcare system for patients. One of the best things about case management is that much of it is done via the internet or phone, so these jobs have the potential to be done remotely, from the comfort of your own home!
